The Tenerife Auditorium by Santiago Calatrava features intriguing applications of local materials and natural light, while functioning as an urban landmark intended to engender a sense of cultural revival.
The sculptural contours of the exterior create volumetrically dynamic interiors that offer dramatic opportunities for daylight. Most notably are the highly articulated and expressive patterns on the vaulted ceiling of the main symphony hall. This effectively illuminates the seating area, while also reinforcing the monumental sensation of the auditorium. The wood panelings which provide the dramatic lighting also contribute to the superior acoustic quality of the performance space.
The elegant ceiling contours of the public foyers along with strategic lighting placement create the impression of a weightless structure. Along with the integration of natural light, the large foyers also benefit from natural ventilation provided by the pleasant climate of the coastal area; eliminating the need to condition the space by mechanical means.
